Turning Data Visibility and Classification Into Mission Advantage

The defense and intelligence communities do not suffer from a shortage of data. Sensors, operational platforms, enterprise systems and decision networks produce information continuously. The challenge, according to John Grancarich, Executive Vice President and Head of Defense & Intelligence at Fortra, is turning those disconnected streams into a governed, coherent view that can support decisions at mission speed.

Visibility comes first. Organizations cannot protect, share or use information effectively if they do not know it exists. Yet data has accumulated across siloed systems for years, often with separate owners, formats and security practices. Creating visibility across those environments gives an agency the starting point for understanding its information landscape.

The next step is classification. An organization must know the sensitivity of its data and apply the markings that determine how it can move and who can use it. Grancarich describes classification as the backbone of secure collaboration because the classification decision shapes everything downstream. Protection policies, sharing rules, transfer mechanisms and curation all depend on a reliable understanding of what the data contains.

That work remains difficult. Grancarich says a significant portion of Fortra’s defense and intelligence activity centers on classification, reflecting both high demand and the need for continuing education. Even sophisticated organizations are still maturing their understanding of how classification enables secure information sharing rather than simply restricting it.

After data becomes visible and classified, the mission challenge shifts to curation. Operational teams rarely need every available data point at once. They need the elements most relevant to the decision in front of them, with enough context and provenance to use those elements confidently. Curation identifies those key pieces and reduces the burden on analysts and decision-makers.

That requires a holistic view of structured and unstructured information. If each source remains in a separate system, users may have to move among tools, reconcile conflicting records and build the mission picture manually. Looking across sources together allows an organization to recognize relationships and patterns that remain hidden inside individual silos.

Interoperability is crucial. Grancarich contrasts an integrated approach with a collection of cybersecurity point products that each address only one stage of the data lifecycle. Discovery, classification, protection and data transfer work best when they operate as parts of the same process. An insight created during discovery should inform classification; classification should drive the appropriate security control; and those controls should allow approved information to move safely to the users and systems that need it.

This creates a practical balance between protection and access. In sensitive environments, the answer cannot be unrestricted sharing. But neither can it be leaving valuable information inaccessible because systems do not communicate or markings are inconsistent. A governed, interoperable model gives organizations the ability to move information with confidence because they understand both its sensitivity and destination.

The ultimate measure is decision speed. During an operation, teams need the most important information at the moment it can influence an outcome. Visibility broadens their awareness. Classification establishes the rules. Protection and transfer preserve security as information moves. Curation brings the mission-relevant elements forward.

Together, those capabilities turn data management into operational advantage. The objective is not a larger repository or another standalone tool. It is an environment in which leaders can see across sources, analysts can work with trusted and properly governed information, and teams can make better decisions without waiting for fragmented data to be discovered and assembled by hand.
